Trans-fats: The story about the worst fats

In the near past, margarine was suggested as a better and plant-based substitute for butter and other animal-based fats. Because of its price and its solid form, margarine became part of almost every processed product on the market. But today we are facing the hazardous effects of the trans-fats on human health as they were widely used in our diet while we were unaware of their impact on our health.

What are trans fats?

There are two types of trans fats found in foods: naturallyoccurring and artificial trans fats. Naturally occurring trans fats can be found in a really small amount in milk and meat products. Artificial trans fats (or trans fatty acids) are created in an industrial process that adds hydrogen to liquid vegetable oils to make them more solid.

WHO and AHA say that eating trans-fats increases your risk of developing heart disease and stroke. It’s also associated with a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Trans-fats may lower your HDL cholesterol “transporter“, and can raise your LDL cholesterol “transporter“. This will affect your HDL to LDL ratio in a negative manner and will increase your risk ofdeveloping cardiovascular diseases.

Trans-fats also support and worsen the inflammatory processes in our bodies, especially in overweight and obese people.

There are studies which show that trans-fats may damage the inner lining of your blood vessels causing endothelial dysfunction.

There is a correlation between trans-fats and some types of cancer but further studies need to be done in order to determine the actual effect of the trans fats on developing different types of cancers.

Maybe you are not sure if coconut oil is poison or not if olive oil is the best oil in the world if butter is a good or bad thing, but you can be sure that trans-fats are the worst fats, and this is scientifically proved!
